Connecting Stripe
Connect Stripe to Oskar with read-only access through Stripe Connect, and how Oskar uses your billing data.
Stripe tells Oskar who your customers are, what they pay, and when something goes wrong with a payment or subscription. Oskar connects through Stripe Connect with read-only access, so it can't change anything in your Stripe account.
Connect your account#
- In setup's first step, or later on Integrations, choose Connect with Stripe.
- Stripe asks you to sign in and choose the account to connect. Its approval screen shows that Oskar is asking for read-only access.
- Approve, and Stripe sends you back to Oskar.
Oskar then reads your Stripe account in the background. You'll see its progress as "Reading your Stripe account". Once it's done, Integrations shows how many paying customers it found and when it last synced.
What Oskar reads#
- Customers: name and billing email address.
- Subscriptions, including ended ones: plan, price, billing interval, seats, status, discounts, current billing period, whether it's set to cancel, and any cancellation reason and comment.
- Invoices from the last 90 days: amount due, and when payment failed or succeeded.
Read-only by design lists exactly which API calls and Stripe notifications Oskar uses.
Staying up to date#
- As it happens: Stripe notifies Oskar when a customer, subscription or invoice changes, so a failed payment or a new cancellation reaches Oskar within moments.
- Every night: Oskar reads your customers, subscriptions and recent invoices again, in case anything was missed.
- On demand: choose Sync now on Integrations.
How Oskar uses billing data#
Monthly recurring revenue#
Oskar works out each subscription's monthly recurring revenue (MRR), so customers on different plans can be compared:
- annual plans are spread across twelve months, and weekly or daily prices are converted to a monthly amount
- seat quantities are multiplied in
- percentage and fixed discounts on the subscription are taken off
Each decision records the customer's MRR at the time, which Impact uses to show what changed later.
Billing signals#
From Stripe, Oskar learns:
- Failing payments: a payment has failed and is still unpaid, or the subscription is past due.
- Cancellations: a subscription set to cancel at the end of its billing period, or already cancelled, with the reason and comment the customer gave. Oskar reads the comment to judge whether they have firmly decided to leave.
- Trials: customers on a free trial, and whether they go on to pay.
- Renewals: annual plans and when they renew.
- Plan and seats: which plan a customer is on and how many seats they pay for. Seats are compared with how many people actually use your product, which comes from PostHog.
Oskar only assesses customers who have a subscription. Customers in Stripe with no subscription aren't shown.
Customers' own words#
Cancellation comments are your customers' own words. Oskar uses them in decisions, and removes them after 13 months.
Disconnecting#
Remove Oskar from the connected applications in your Stripe dashboard. Stripe tells Oskar, which marks the connection as disconnected and stops receiving data from that account. What Oskar already read stays in your workspace until you ask us to delete it. Email hello@infinitestack.co.
